Dr Fisher grew up in a small village south of Tamworth, and this was a major incentive throughout his surgical training in Sydney to gain techniques and skills that would help deliver world class surgery to a regional environment, equivalent to those expected to be delivered in a Metropolitan Hospital.
Completing his undergraduate medical degree at the University of Sydney in 1993 he commenced his medical residency at Westmead Hospital in 1994, quickly completing all the requirements for Surgical Training. He was appointed to the Surgical Training Program in 1997 and obtained his Surgical Fellowship in 2000. Post fellowship he was appointed Clinical Surgical Superintendent, General Surgeon and Colorectal Fellow at Westmead.
In 2002 Dr Fisher was appointed to Dubbo Base Hospital and Dubbo Private Hospital. In 2005 he was also appointed to Mudgee District Hospital where he visits monthly.
Since commencing surgical practice in Dubbo, Dr Fisher has been heavily involved in teaching medical students from both the University of Sydney and University of Wollongong. The Surgical Training program has also been of specific interest to Dr Fisher and since 2002 the number of surgical trainees has increased from 2 to 5 Registrars training in Dubbo every 6 months. Dr Fisher is currently Dubbo's Surgical Supervisor of Training for the Royal Australasian College Of Surgeons, and his dedication to training was recognized in 2015 being voted by the NSW surgical trainees as the recipient for the "Excellence in Surgical Teaching" award for NSW. Dr Fisher, along with a number of his surgical trainees have published scientific research papers that have been accepted by world leading medical journals all based on the management of patients in Dubbo.
